Edwin Hubble Background Information

Edwin Hubble Portrait

Edwin Hubble is best known for his theory of the expansion of the universe. This is the basis for one possibility of the creation on the world. In addition, his studies of nebulae have indicated that there are more galaxies than the one in which we live. Edwin Hubble's research has increased our knowledge of the universe in terms of its potential origin, size, and characteristics.

The findings of Edwin Hubble have increased our grasp of understanding regarding the universe including its size and characteristics. His conclusion of the universe expanding (Hubble's Law) has resulted in the Big Bang Theory – as possible explanation to how the universe was formed. Once Hubble's constant is given a definite value, scientists will be able to determine the age of the Earth. Galaxies within the universe are now classified and organized in a more efficient manner based on Hubble's research. He was also able to measure the distance from Earth to some of the objects he saw through his telescope. Edwin Hubble will also certainly be remembered because of the concepts and items named for him – including Hubble's Law, the Hubble constant, and the Hubble radius. The Hubble Space Telescope, launched in 1990, was named after him, and is in outer space collecting images that will eventually help to determine the value of the Hubble constant. Not only did Edwin Hubble improve the information available concerning the universe, but he inspired others to research these fields as well.
